Brewing and Coffee Quality

The 9Barista comes with a gas or induction adapter, a small tamper, and instructions to use cold filtered water. The recommended dose is 20 grams of coffee, though lighter roasts may benefit from slightly lower doses around 18 to 19 grams.

The coffee tastes like the beans that went in, without the harsh bitterness that occurs when brew temperatures run too high. The texture is smooth, and the pouring action naturally stirs the shot, eliminating the need for additional stirring. The espresso works well as a base for milk drinks, though the 9Barista has no built-in milk heating capability.

The machine requires a slightly coarser grind than traditional espresso machines for the same dose to flow normally, suggesting the pressure may be slightly lower or decline during the shot. This is not a flaw, but rather a characteristic of the design that users should expect.

The Dialing-In Challenge

The most significant limitation of the 9Barista is the time required to dial in your brewing process. The ideal brew time from cold is six minutes, and hitting this target is crucial for consistent results.

If the brew time falls short of six minutes, the upper cooling chamber may boil dry, resulting in insufficient cooling of the brewing water and an aggressive, overly hot shot. If heating is too slow, you won’t discover the problem until six minutes have passed with no espresso flowing. The machine is not designed for rapid successive brews. Between shots, you must cool the unit, disassemble it, refill the water chamber, and start again. This makes the 9Barista unsuitable for making multiple coffees for multiple people in quick succession. It is a single-user device, best suited to someone making one espresso per session.

Build Quality and Limitations

The 9Barista is very well machined with tight tolerances throughout. The wood handles feel solid, and the overall construction conveys quality and care. However, there are minor areas where the engineering could be tighter. The portafilter lock-in mechanism has slightly more play than the rest of the machine, and the fit does not feel as refined as other components.

The manufacturer has identified and addressed a known issue with water spitting from the chimney during brewing. This occurs when the cooling chamber lacks nucleation points on its interior surfaces. The fix is simple: lightly sanding the interior surfaces to roughen them slightly, or using slightly less water (around 110 millilitres instead of 120). Future production runs are expected to address this in manufacturing.

The 9Barista offers no control over pressure or temperature. It does what it is engineered to do, consistently and reliably, but users cannot adjust these parameters if their preferred coffee requires different conditions. The gaskets inside the machine will wear over time and require replacement, though this is a normal maintenance item for any espresso equipment.

At 295 pounds, the 9Barista is expensive, though the price reflects the engineering, design, and small-scale manufacturing involved. It costs more than some lever machines like the Flair, but it automates the pressure generation and temperature control that manual lever machines require the user to manage.

Who This Machine Is For

The 9Barista suits a very specific user profile. You need limited kitchen space, a genuine interest in espresso quality, and no requirement for milk-based drinks. You must be willing to spend six minutes per shot and accept a learning curve during the dialing-in phase. You should be making espresso for yourself, not for guests or family members who expect quick service.

If you own a moka pot and have wished it could make true espresso, the 9Barista is worth considering. It delivers on that promise, producing genuinely delicious coffee in a compact, beautiful package. But it demands patience, attention, and a commitment to the ritual of stovetop brewing.
