Introduction

The Merida Reacto has long been a favourite among Hong Kong cyclists seeking a serious aero road bike. After a six-year development cycle, the fifth generation arrives with a complete redesign that goes far beyond cosmetic updates. The new Reacto combines aerodynamic excellence with genuine comfort and practical versatility, making it a compelling choice for both competitive riders and enthusiasts tackling varied terrain.

Aerodynamic Design and Wind Tunnel Performance

The Reacto Gen 5 earned its credentials through rigorous testing. In independent wind tunnel testing conducted by the German cycling authority TOUR magazine, the new Reacto achieved a drag coefficient of 197 watts at 45 km/h—one of the lowest figures among production aero bikes and the top-ranked result among mass-produced frames. This performance surpasses well-known competitors including the Cervélo S5 and Colnago Y1Rs.

The aerodynamic advantage stems from several deliberate design choices. The front fork is noticeably wider and flatter than its predecessor, reducing frontal drag while creating a streamlined flow. The head tube features a flattened profile that minimises wind resistance while maintaining a broad shape to guide airflow smoothly along the frame. The down tube sits further from the wheel than before, a spacing optimised through computer simulation to help manage the turbulent air shed by the tyre and direct it efficiently toward the rear of the frame.

The seat tube maintains the distinctive S-Flex design from the previous generation while incorporating a longer, more refined profile that contributes to aerodynamic flow. The rear stays feature a pronounced dropped design that creates a dual-wing visual effect while further improving airflow management. Even the bottom bracket area incorporates streamlined shaping to reduce drag and improve pedalling stiffness.

Merida partnered with Vision to develop a new seagull-shaped carbon handlebar specifically for the Reacto, further enhancing aerodynamic efficiency at the front of the bike.

Weight Control and Climbing Performance

Despite the larger frame profile, the Reacto Gen 5 is actually lighter than its predecessor. The CF5 frame weighs just 950g in a medium size—108g lighter than the previous generation. The complete bike achieves a claimed weight of 7.1kg, just 300g above the UCI race limit of 6.8kg, putting it on par with bikes used in professional events like the Tour de France.

This weight control is critical for a bike designed to excel on varied terrain. The aerodynamic improvements do not come at the cost of climbing performance, making the Reacto a genuinely versatile platform rather than a one-dimensional speed machine.

Comfort and Ride Quality

Aero bikes have traditionally sacrificed comfort for speed, but the Reacto Gen 5 was explicitly designed to challenge that assumption. The dropped rear stays work to reduce vibration transmitted from the rear wheel, creating a more compliant ride feel. The S-Flex seat tube design, refined from the previous generation, further dampens road chatter and impacts.

Tyre clearance has been expanded to 32mm, a practical upgrade that reflects modern racing standards. Wider tyres allow lower pressures without sacrificing performance, which reduces jarring on rough surfaces and improves grip and power transfer. The geometry remains unchanged from the previous generation, allowing existing Reacto owners to transition seamlessly while maintaining a balanced, race-ready position.

Frame Geometry and Sizing

The Reacto Gen 5 retains the geometry of its predecessor, ensuring continuity for riders upgrading from earlier versions. A medium frame offers a Stack and Reach ratio of 1.41, comparable to other major brands. The headset allows approximately 25mm of spacer adjustment for fine-tuning comfort and position.

Merida offers an unusually broad range of sizes, from 3XS through XXL, making the Reacto accessible to younger riders and those of smaller stature who might otherwise be forced into oversized frames. Sizing can differ from other brands—for example, a Merida XS frame has similar geometry to a Giant medium—so proper fitting is recommended. Jollymap offers both Size Fit and comprehensive Bike Fit services to help match frame size and component setup to individual riders.

Specifications and Availability

The Reacto 5000 model shown features a Shimano 105 Di2 drivetrain, Prologo saddle, Vision 35mm wheelset, and 28C tyres. The complete bike weighs 9.17kg with a computer mount. Additional configurations are planned, including Team series variants with the new seagull-shaped carbon handlebar, available for pre-order through Merida’s official channels and retailers.

Verdict

The Reacto Gen 5 represents a significant evolution rather than a minor refresh. The aerodynamic improvements are measurable and class-leading, the weight is competitive, and the ride quality balances speed with genuine comfort. For Hong Kong cyclists who regularly tackle flat routes like the New Territories or coastal paths, the Reacto’s blend of efficiency and practicality makes it an excellent choice. Whether you are racing or riding for fitness, the Reacto Gen 5 delivers on its promise to be a truly all-around aero bike.
